British Values

Atkinson Road Nursery School

British Values Statement

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated this year (2014).  At Atkinson Road Nursery School these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy
Democracy is embedded throughout our school curriculum. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard.  The School has received the “Listening to Children” award every year since 2009.

The Rule of Law
The importance of laws whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced.  Our school has ‘Nursery Promises’, which are deeply embedded in our work every day. These promises are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every pupil is able to play and learn in a safe and ordered environment.  By means of our Nursery Promises, our pupils are taught and begin to understand the values and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Individual Liberty
Within school, and through our curriculum, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education.

Mutual Respect

By means of our work on Nursery Promises our children become aware of, and learn to respect, other children and adults. Staff use stories to teach kindness and help children begin to understand the need to respect others' ideas, differences and points of view. Our values are shared with home through newsletters and website information.  Adults throughout the school model, demonstrate and promote respect for others.

Tolerance of Those With Different Faiths And Beliefs
Our core ethos and values ensure tolerance of those who have different faiths and beliefs.  At Atkinson Road Nursery School, beliefs, traditions and customs from around the world are celebrated eg Divali, Christmas, Ramadan.  Through these activities our pupils begin to gain an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society.
