Equality Statement

The Public Sector Equality Duty (April 2011) states that all public bodies are required to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act.2010
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

The Governors and Staff of Atkinson Road Nursery School are committed to fulfilling these duties.

We remove and minimise disadvantage by:

  •          Ensuring our environment and curriculum are accessible to all children, making adjustments where necessary
  •          Employing a highly visual style of teaching including the use of makaton sign language, photo cards and visual timetables

We take steps to meet different needs by:

  •          Identifying children who need extra targeted support, sharing strategies and tracking achievement
  •          Identifying vulnerable groups, sharing strategies and tracking achievement
  •          Working closely with outside agencies

We encourage participation when it is disproportionately low by:

  •          Employing a Parent Support Advisor who works closely with individual families to improve attendance
  •          Listening to parents when setting up workshops or learning days so that their needs are met
  •          Developing a bank of volunteers to support parents in their home language
  •          Using a bilingual support worker to liase with our hard-to-reach Czech Roma families
  •          Translating Key documents and newsletters
